Walnut

An earth tone with the warmth of unpolished gold.

Walnut is a four-season neutral—quiet, grounded, and warm. It begins as an earthy tone, and on the right fiber, it carries the subtle warmth of unpolished gold.

THE LORE

The Color Kept by the Earth

There is an old belief that every lasting color first belonged to a force of nature. Yellow belonged to flowers. Red belonged to fire. Blue belonged to stone and jewel. But walnut belonged to the earth. Flowers bloomed, then withered. Fire burned, then fell to ash. Jewels caught the light, yet even they could break. The earth remained. So walnut is remembered as the color kept by the earth—quiet, grounded, and enduring.

THE PLANT

The color begins in the outer hull.

Walnut dye does not come from the kernel we eat. The deep earthy color comes from the outer hull—the green covering around the walnut fruit. This part of the plant darkens in water and releases the tones used in natural dyeing.
